Brunei Ministry of Health (MoH) rcently acquired 7 units of new emergency ambulance using the Mercedes Sprinter chassis and bodywork by Macneillie, United Kingdom. The 7 new ambulance are supplied by Bayu Ilham motors where 5 are stationed at Brunei Muara, 1 at Kuala Belait and 1 at Tutong. The ambulances are fitted with compartments for live support equipment on both sides of the body. While the internal section are able to carry up to 2 casualties if needed. For on road safety purpose this ambulance is fitted with LED warning lighting and at its rear is fully furbished with reflective decals to warn motorist and personnel at incident sites.

Fresia F800 6x6 Fire 3 and Fire 5

In order to increase its aircraft firefighting and rescue respond, Brunei Civil Aviation Airport Fire Service (DCA AFS) recently acquire two 2012 Fresia F800 6x6 / Iveco Vector/ Naffco Falcon crash tender. The new appliances bearing the callsign Fire 3 and Fire 5 are currently stationed at Aiport Fire Station no.1, Brunei International Airport. Both appliance can carry 12,00 liters of water and 1440 foam. This appliance are unique compared to other AFS appliances as the water and foam indicator lights are build on both sides where green indicates water and orange indicates foam. For firefighting support this appliance also equipped with dry powder equipment and firefighting equipment (nozzles, branches etc). It is crewed by four personnel (driver, 2 crews and one deck observer). While for body,chassis and cabin protection this apliance also fitted with mist sprayer for cooling purposes. The Iveco Vector engine which powered this appliances are able to make this appliances driven up to 120 km/h (top speed).

AFS receive 3 new appliances

The Airport Fire Service (AFS) of the Brunei Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) recently (5 January 2012) receive three new fire appliances. The new fire appliances consists of two major foam tender and one firefighting water tender.

The inauguration of the new fire appliances are officiated by Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Hamzah Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdullah bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakar, Minister of Communication. during the Aviation Day celebration which was held at the Brunei International Airport (BIA) main fire station.

According to Mohd Sajideen who is the Superintendent of the AFS said “This new fire appliances will replaced the ageing fire appliances which is used since the 1990s. AT the same time this new fire appliance also will increase the professionalism of the AFS in handling various firefighting and rescue challenges as well as to meet International Civil Aviation (ICAO) category for providing aircraft firefighting cover.”

The Major Foam Tender which is also known as crash tender is build on Fresia truck chassis and powered by Iveco engine. While the bodyworks are build by Naffco of Dubai, UAE. This appliance is able to carry 12,000 liters of water and 1,440 liters of foam. It also able to speed off 120 km/h in case of emergency occurred at the runway.

Meanwhile the Firefighting water tender appliance was build on Iveco Trakker chassis and bodywork by Sentosa of Indonesia. This appliance will be used by AFS to respond to domestic fire around the airport premises and to provide water support during large scale emergency such as aircraft related incidents. As an addition this new appliance also carry specialized equipment for Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) incidents in case such accidents occurred at the airport.

8 officers from the Assistant Station Officer (ASO) recruit intake 1981/1982 recently (Thursday 5 January 2012) holds reunion. The renunion was held at a restaurant at the capital. The reunion was chaired by CFO Hj.Wan Ramli bin Wan Ibrahim, who is now the Chief Fire Officer of the Airport Fire Service (AFS), Brunei Department of Civil Aviation (DCA).

Also present is Superintendent. Hj Sofian bin Hj Tahir, Supeintnendent. Hj Ahmad bin Hj Mohd Daud, Superintendent Ranee bin Hj Othman, Assistant Superintendent Fire Rescue (ASFR) Hj Kassim bin Hj Omar, ASFR Hj Ahmad bin Hj Bohari, ASFR Pg Hj Othman bin Pg Hj Abd Rahman, Station Officer (SO) Malinau bin Pantuk. Also present was Pg. Hj Ahmad bin Pg Hj. Apong who is the instructor for the ASO 1981/1982 intake.

During the reunion the members not only discuss about their old memories but they also exchange ideas on their firefighting job as most of them are currently holding senior positions in various firefighting agencies in Brunei such as Brunei Fire and Rescue Department (BFRD) and Airport Fire Station (AFS).

For full body protection this appliance are fitted with cooling sprinkler at both sides of the body and below its chassis.

Accident at Jalan Bunut

An accident involving three cars occurred this morning (Friday 23 December 2011) at Jalan Bunut, the early morning accident occurred around 9am at the area between Bunut Primary School and Bunut Mosque. The accident saw three vehicles bumped into each other thus causing major damage to two of the car while the other one only suffered minor damage. The accident also caused traffic congestion starting from Jalan Bengkurong traffic light junction. No injuries are reported in the accident.

Mukim Kilanas CBDRM ends with high note

The recently held Community Based Disaster Reduction Management (CBDRM) for the Mukim Kilanas at Brunei Muara District concluded with high note. The CBDRM at the Mukim Kilanas is the 6^th CBDRM programme which was held at selected villages and mukim across the country by the National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC).

During the two day event which was held from 29^th until 30^th November at the Mukim Kilanas Community Hall at Kampong Bengkurong the CBDRM participants which consists of community leaders at the mukim as well as elderly and youths of the mukim. The participants are also briefed on the method of resuscitation by CPR as well as firefighting using the fire extinguisher.

An exhibition which was participated by various emergency services such as NDMC, Brunei Fire and Rescue Department (BFRD), Brunei Shell Fire and Emergency Response (BSPFAERS), YSSHHB Volunteer, Brunei Red Crescent (PBSMB), Brunei Meteorological and Department of Electric Service (DES).

In order to reduce disaster risk at the mukim the participants along with their trainers which was appointed by NDMC took tour around the mukim to assess disaster prone areas such as areas which are prone to flooding, bush fire and other type of disaster. On the final day of the CBDRM the participants briefed on their findings to NDMC representatives as well as receiving certificates for participating the CBDRM.

King Cobra caught at UBD

A King Cobra snake with estimated length of 1.5 meter was caught at the Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) Male Hostel last Thursday (Thursday 24 November 2011). The dangerous reptile was spotted by one of the student using the hostel bathroom around 5:30pm who later immediately alerted the fire and rescue department hotline 995. A team of firefighter from Rimba Fire Station in a fire engine arrived on the scene and found that the snake was hiding at one of the bathroom cubicle. It took the firefighter 5 minutes to catch the reptile using the snake catcher tool.

According to one of the UBD residential college committe (JASA) this is the biggest cobra been catch at UBD as before this a lot of similar incidents had occurred at the hostel complex due to the location of the hostel which is near to the forested area.

Flashfloods at Kampong Tanjong Nangka

The heavy rain which occur since Sunday (13 nOvember 2011) until the early morning of Monday (14 November 2011) caused several flashfloods occur at several parts of Brunei Muara District. Several flashfloods are reported at the main roads and simpang at Tanjong Nangka, Jerudong, Tanjong Bunut and surrounding areas. The flashfloods are worsened with the nearby drains which are clogged with rubbish, muds as well as tree branches. Road users can be seen driving their vehicles at a slow speed at the flooded areas to prevent from unnecessary incidents occurred. The flashfloods recede few hours later.

MFRD Director General visit Marine Fire Station

A delegation of Malaysia Fire and Rescue Department (MFRD) recently (17 November 2011, Thursday) visit the Marine Fire Station at Kampong Sungai Lampai. The visit is part of the working visit by the Yang Amat Setia Dato' Wan Mohd Nor bin Hj Ibrahim, MFRD Director General during the delegation stay in Brunei.

Upon arrival at the Marine Fire Station the delegation was greeted by Senior Superintendent of Fire Rescue SSFR Mahli bin Haji Bolhaji, Operation D Commanding Officer, Assitant Superintendent of Fire Rescue ASFR Sophian, the Marine Fire Station Commander as well as the fire station officers and personnel.

The delegation then proceed for a group photo session before being briefed on the Operation D Command history and background which was briefed by SSFR Mahli bin Haji Bolhaji. SSFR Mahli also briefed the delegation on the equipments used by the firefighters to fight fire at Kampong Ayer such as the dry riser as well as the state of art fireboats and fire engines used by Operation D Command.

After the briefing the delegation then proceed for a boat ride around Kampong Ayer where they witness themselves the uniqueness of Kampong Ayer which is the Brunei tourists attraction. The visit concluded with the delegation visit the Kampong Ayer heritage gallery where they also took opportunity to view Kampong Ayer and its surrounding areas from the gallery viewing tower.

The Malaysia Fire and Rescue Department (MFRD) / Jabatan Bomba dan Penyelamat Malaysia director Yang Amat Seri Dato Wan Mohd Nor bin Hj.Ibrahim and his delegates this morning paid visit to the Brunei Fire and Rescue Department (BFRD) at Old Airport Berakas.

The arrival of the delegates which comprises of Yang Amat Setia Dato Wan Mohd Nor bin Hj.Ibrahim and his delegates which comprise of Sarawak Head of fire rescue director as well as the officers from the Malaysia Fire and Rescue Department headquartes.

The delegates firstly arrived at the Sungai Tujoh checkpoint at Kuala Belait, then the delegates proceed to the BFRD headquarters at Old Airport Berakas. Upon arrival the MFRD director and delegates was greeted by BFRD Director Awang Yahya bin Haji Abdul Rahman. Yang Amat Seri Dato Wan Mohd Nor bin Hj.Ibrahim the proceed to inspect the parade which comprise of the BFRD personnel from all branches.

From the parade the MFRD director then proceed for the light refreshement before continuing to the bilateral briefing between both Fire and Rescue Department personnel at the BFRD Multi Purpose Hall meeting room. After the briefing the delegates then proceed for group photo session.

After the group photo session the MFRD Director and delegates visit the BFRD Women Operation Unit and witnessing the demonstration on firefighting and rescue operation at high rise building. The delegates also witness a demonstration by the Setia Motors fire marshal team. The visit concluded with the mass Zohor prayer at the BFRD prayer hall.

During their stay in Brunei the delegation will visit various places of interest in Brunei as well as paid visit to the acting Minister of Home Affairs and the Marine and Pengkalan Batu Fire Stations before proceeding to visit to Limbang, Sarawak on Friday

Orchid Garden Hotel Fire Drill

Orchid Garden Hotel (OGH) recently (9 November 2011, Wednesday) held its annual fire drill. The drill is held to test the readiness of the hotel staff especially its first aider and fire marshal in case of real fire outbreak at the hotel.

The drill which starts around 2:45pm saw a scenario where a fire occur at the hotel dining hall. The hotel staffs are alerted with the fire bell thus sending a party of its fire marshal and first aider to the fire scene while another team of fire marshal evacuating the hotel staffs and its residents. As they are evacuating the dining hall minor explosion occur thus causing several casualty trapped in the hall. Firefighters then arrived at the scene and rescue the victim immediately.

During the drill three fire engines and personnel from the Berakas and Women Operation Unit are deployed as well as paramedics from RIPAS hospital are also involved. Yayasan Primary School visit Berakas Fire Station

A group of 142 students and 8 teachers recently (27 October 2011, Thursday) held a study visit to the Berakas Fire Station. The visits are held as part of the year 6 students activities after their P.S.R examination which ended recently.

Upon arrival at the Brunei Fire and Rescue Department (BFRD) Multi Purpose Hall, the visitors were brought for a briefing on the history and development of the BFRD since it was formed in 1960. The briefing was facilitated by Station Officer (SO) Norzali Apong, BFRD Public Relation Officer.

From the briefing the group then proceeds to the Berakas and the Women Operation Unit fire stations. At the fire station the group was demonstrated on the high rise building rescue by the BFRD Special Squad members. The visitors are also given opportunity to wear the firefighting suit as well as experiencing the fire engine ride. A firefighting and rescue equipment as well as fire appliances exhibition are also held for the visitors.

The visit concluded with the exchanging of souvenir and group photo session.

SR Katok A visit Rimba Fire Station

A group of 75 students and 6 teachers from the Katok A primary school this recently (26 October 2011, Wednesday) held a study visit to the Rimba Fire Station at the Rimba Housing Scheme.

The visit was aimed to increase the awareness of the children on fire safety as well as to expose them to the career of firefighting. Upon arrival at the fire station the visitors were greeted by Station Officer (SO) Norzali Apong, SO Md Ali Hassanal from Rimba Fire Station as well as the Rimba fire station and BFRD Special Squad Personnel.

The visitors then briefed by the officers and personnel at the station of the importance of fire safety especially at their home and school. The students are also briefed on never to misuse or play with matches and lighters as they can cause fire if used carelessly. The station personnel and the Special Squad also demonstrated the high rise building rescue as well as the usage of the firefighting equipment such as fire hoses and water monitor which is used to fight fire at high rise building. Fire engine rides are also held in order to give experience to the students on how firefighters respond to incidents. The visit concluded with light refreshment and group photo session.

Police Personnel Completes Fire Marshal Course

20 selected police personnel from various police stations at Brunei Muara District this recently (26 October 2011, Wednesday). They receive their certificates of completion in a function held at the Muara Fire Station.

Present as guest of honour was the Acting Superintendent of Fire Rescue Abd Sufriyan Bin Hj.Abd Hamid, the Deputy Commanding Officer of Operation A. Also present was Assistant Superintendent Police (ASP) Mohd Noor Bin Hj.Abd Rahman the OCS of Muara Police Station, Assistant Superintendent of Fire Rescue (ASFR) Nazri bin Hj.Anuar, Muara Fire Station Commander as well as Station Commanders under Operation A command, fire marshal instructors and the participants.

The event started with speech by the guest of honour Ag.SFR Abd Sufriyan where in his speech he applaud the effort by the police personnel to participate in the course as it can give experience to the participants who possibly in the future can help the department in case of emergencies such as fires. He also touched that from January to August 2011 6,000 participants from various government and non-government agencies had participated in various fire awareness programmes such as fire drills, fire safety talk. He also hoped more participation from the public are expected in the near future.

The fire marshal course is the first time held at the Muara Fire Station and it also help to bind ties between both emergency services namely the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) and Brunei Fire and Rescue Department (BFRD).

18 October 2011 Tuesday - An early morning rush hour accident occurred at the Rimba-Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) T-Junction. The accident which occur around 8am saw the collision of two cars. One of the cars are badly damaged while one of the car nearly hit the nearby lamp post. A team of police personnel in a patrol car rushed to the scene to investigate the accident and control the traffic flow. No injuries are reported in the accident.

A snake appeared yesterday morning (Monday 19 September 2011) at the “Banar Tah Tu” art gallery at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) which was set up in conjunction with the UBD Convo Festival 2011. The incident which occur around 10am caused exhibitors as well as visitors evacuate the gallery in order to prevent unnecessary incident occurred to them. The snake was spotted first by one of the exhibitors at the poverty themed shack at “SCOT” gallery. Upon spotting the snake they quickly alert the nearby security personnel who then called the Fire and Rescue Department. A team of firefighters in a fire engine from the Rimba Fire Station rushed to the scene to capture the reptile.

Heavy downpour caused accidents

The heavy downpour which occur since early morning (Thursday 15 September 2011) caused a massive accident involving three vehicles at the stretch of Muara-Tutong Highway few meters to the slip road leading to Empire Hotel and Country Club.

The accident which occur yesterday (15 September 2011, Thursday) around 7am, saw a saloon car, four wheel drive vehicle and a delivery truck involved in the rush hour accident. The impact of the accident caused the saloon car and the delivery truck severely damaged. To add worst the delivery truck overturned thus hitting the road barrier and damaging its cargo hold area and at the same time causing its ice cubes load to scatter at the nearby bush.

According to one of the victim who drives the four wheel drive said “Our car was slightly knocked by the saloon car thus causing us and the truck to lose control upon hitting the brake. The impact of the braking cause the ice delivery truck to overturn while the saloon car suffer damage in the front and its rear section”

A team of police personnel from the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) Rapid Response Squad (STS) in three police cars rushed to the scene to direct the traffic. Fortunately no victims from the affected vehicles are injured in the accident. The accident also saw major traffic congestion from the UBD coastal exit road and the Jerudong flyover area

An accident involving two cars occur at the Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) main gate. The accident occur last recently (15 September 2011, Thursday) when slight drizzle occur around UBD and its surrounding area.

According to one of victim said “I was travelling to UBD when suddenly a car from the Tungku side failed to stop and hit my car thus causing my car to turned 360 degree.”

The accident also saw a roadsign suffered damaged after being hit by one of the car and two girls from the car which come from the Tungku are suffered minor injuries. A team of police personnel also rushed to the scene to investigate and assists the victims

A fire broke out yesterday morning (15 September 2011, Thursday) at the Berakas Power Station store, Terunjing. The fire which occurs around 11am saw a container packed with spare electrical equipment engulfed in flame.

Upon receiving an emergency call from the power station staffs a team of firefighters from Lambak Kanan fire station with two fire engines responded to the scene to put out the fire. Upon arrival they found out flame are raging from the container thus causing the firefighters to use the offensive firefighting to extinguish the fire. Their quick action also managed to save another container next to the burning container.

The fire was put out in 5 minutes however as the remaining embers are still burning deep inside the container the firefighters had to break open the container using the hydraulic spreader and putting it out with foam.

Present to supervise the operation was the Acting Assistant Superintendent of Fire Rescue (ASFR) Ali Hassanal, Lambak Kanan Fire Station Commander as well as Berakas Power Station officers. The cause and loss of the fire are still investigated by the Fire and Rescue Department.

Recently admin had visited Kampong Danau at Tutong District. Fortunately the "hunting" for the old appliance are paid off as admin had found a house where its owner succesffuly bought several emergency vehicles and parked it outside his house. It ranges emergency vehicles from 1980s up to 1990s. Admin believed that the owner possibly bought many vehicles before. This is what admin spotted at the compound:

1) Royal Brunei Police Force old vehicles - different types from vans to patrol cars.

2) 1990s Scania 93m / SK Fire / Bronto Skylift 22-2T1 ex Brunei Fire and Rescue Department Hydraulic Platform no.14 (HP14). Last station : Sungai Liang Fire Station.

3) 1980s Isuzu/McAlister Emergency Vehicle no.2 (ET2). ex Brunei Fire and Rescue Department. Last station: Seria fire station.

4) 1980s Mercedes with two large tanks possibly Dry Powder/Foam Tender. ex Brunei LNG Fire Department.

Snake Catching at Tanjong Nangka

A houseowner at Simpang 1747, Kampong Tanjong Nangka was shocked yesterday (9 September 2011, Friday) to found out a snake trying to enter his house. The incident which occurred around 2:40pm caused the houseowner immediately alerted the Fire and Rescue personnel to catch the poisonous reptile.

Upon receiving the emergency call at around 2:45pm a team of firefighters and a fire engine from Jerudong Fire Station led by ABK Abu Bakar rushed to the said house. However upon arrival the firefighters the snake managed to slip away to the nearby bushes.

According to the houseowner who wished to remain anonymous said “The snake is small and had a flat head (cobra), when we see it the snake was at the landscape plants planted near the house.”

Meanwhile ABK Abu Bakar said “Although Cobra is poisonous than phyton but cobra tend to be more complicated to catch as it is swift and small in shape and it also can slip through tight spaces such as cracks. While phyton will tend to stay at a particular place thus making it easier to catch.

In relation to this the Brunei Fire and Rescue Department (BFRD) urged members of the public to always call the emergency hotline 995 if they witness dangerous animals such as snakes and always trim or clean their landscape from wild bushes or any landscape plants which can attract dangerous animals.

Accident at UBD

A minor accident involving two saloon cars occurred this afternoon (5 September 2011, Monday) at the hilly access road leading to Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) Mosque. The incident occurred around 12:45pm when Muslims are busy performing the Zohor prayer at the nearby mosque.

According to one of the passenger at one of the car said “My friend who drive the car from the mosque are trying to evade the upcoming car from the hilly access road, but although she trying to evade the upcoming car unfortunately hit my friends car.”

One of the car suffered minor damage to the signal light and scars on the paintwork while the other car also get scars due to the impact of the accident. Fortunately no injuries are reported in the accident.

As Muslims around the country are busy visiting their relatives and friends for the Hari Raya Celebration, several emergency services personnel including the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) personnel are busy providing assistance tonight (2 September 2011 Friday) to road users who are in trouble at several roads at Brunei Muara District.

In the first case at the Berakas Roundabout near the Berakas Helat Centre a car suffered from engine problem. The incident which occurs around 7:45pm caused minor traffic congestion at the road from Delima area heading towards the roundabout. A team of police personnel in a patrol car from the nearby Berakas Police Station rushed to the scene to direct the traffic and reduce the congestion.

Meanwhile at Jalan Jerudong another incident involving a four wheel drive (4WD) vehicle causing traffic congestion. Last Thursday (28 July 2011) two separate bushfire occurred at Belait District. Both fires occurred on the same afternoon keeping firefighters from Kuala Belait and Seria fire stations busy around the clock to control and extinguish the fire.

The first bushfire occurred at Simpang 842 of the Jalan Singa Menteri government housing area. The fire started around 3pm due to the hot and dry weather which affect Belait District for the past few days. A team of firefighters and a fire engine from Kuala Belait fire station responded to the scene after receiving emergency call from concerned members of the public. However by late afternoon the fire getting worse due to strong wind and dry vegetation thus causing the firefighters to request more fire engines and firefighters to control the fire. By night the firefighters are seen using their spotlight to illuminate the scene. By 11:40pm the fire are getting controlled.

One of the firefighters interviewed at the scene ABKS Yusop said “Although the bushfire occurred at the empty land plot but we are concerned the smoke as well as the fire which are getting nearer to the nearby Belait Public Works Department Headquarters and its residential area. We also concern and worried on the public health as the thick smoke not only affect the nearby housing area but the surrounding areas as well”

Meanwhile at Anduki area near the Seria town another bushfire occurred. The fire which occurred around 4pm saw a team of firefighters and their fire engines are responded to the scene to fight the fire.

In order to make their education institutions a safer place to study, a group of students and two teacher are currently undergoing their three day fire marshal course which are held at Belait Fire Station. The three day course which is held from 18 July concluded today (20 July 2011).

The course are facilitated by Operational B Command Public Relation Unit and supported by personnel from Belait Fire Station. The course participants are 16 students from Jefri Bolkiah Engineering College (MKJB) and two teachers from PSN Pg.Mohd Yusof primary school in Seria. Present to supervise the course was Ag.ASFR Md Taha Bin Bakar, Operation B Public Relation Officer, ASFR Md Shazwan Suhaine, Belait Fire Station Commander as well as personnel from Public Relation and Belait Fire Station.

During the course the participants are taught on the usage of basic of firefghting which includes firefighting equipment such as fire extinguishers, fire hoses and its equipment. Beside that they also taught on casualty evacuation and proper building evacuation procedure.

The appointment of Fire Marshal at both education institutions are very important as they not only because of the number of students and staffs at particular institutions but it also looking on the flammable materials usage at their premises such as MKJB where the students are dealing with welding equipments in their particular subjects which can cause fire if used carelessly.

Currently, the Operational B Command of the Belait District had trained hundreds of Fire Marshal which represent government and non-government agencies, schools, commercial and hotel premise staffs as well as youths at the district. The fire marshal will act as first responding personnel in evacuating and extinguish fire at their particular premise if any emergency such as fire occurred.

2 July 2011 Saturday - In order to test the firefighting capability at high rise building and also to test the hotel recently appointed fire marshal, the Operational B Command of Belait District fire rescue department today (2 July 2011, Saturday) held a surprise fire drill at the Swiss Hotel at the Belait Town.

The fire drill which started around 10:50am saw curios members of public who flocked to the town in the weekend to flocked to the scene. Present to observe the drill was ASFR Wan Zulaini Wan Ibrahim, Head of B Command fire prevention, ASFR Md Shazwan Suhaine, Station Commander of Belait Fire Station and Ag.ASFR Mohd Taha Bakar, B Command Public Relation Officer.

The drill saw the involvement of emergency personnel and equipment from the Belait Fire Station, Belait Police Station and paramedics from the Suri Seri Begawan Hospital (HSSB). Among the objective of the drill are not only to test the capability of teamwork among the emergency personnel involved but it is also a way to promote fire safety awareness especially at commercial buildings such as hotel.

During the 30 minutes drill, the scenario saw a fire occur at the hotel upper floor. Realising there is a fire the hotel fire alarm was set off and the hotel fire marshal sprung into action to extinguish the fire and evacuate all the hotel staffs as well as the hotel occupants. During the evacuation a woman suffer broken leg and trapped in the building due to the thick smoke. It ended when firefighters wearing the Breathing Apparatus Sets (B.A.Sets) rescue the woman and she was brought to the hospital by HSSB paramedics.

An accident involving a saloon car and a four wheel drive (4WD) vehicle occur recently (30 June 2011, Thursday) near the Mumong Roundabout, Kuala Belait. The accidents occur around 10am when most part of the country are affected by the heavy rain. One of the car are badly damaged while the 4WD vehicle only suffered minor damaged. Brunei International Airport (BIA) Main Fire Station

The Brunei Civil Aviation Fire Service is the main firefighting agency under the Brunei Civil Aviation Department that plays a key role in ensuring the safety of every aircraft that lands in the country.

It operates from three fire stations, which provide a 24-hour aircraft firefighting and rescue cover, and they are found at the Brunei International Airport, His Majesty Sultan Flight Hangar and His Majesty Sultan Flight Heliport at Istana Durul Hana area.

The department is also equipped with state-of-art fire appliances, such as a crash tender fitted with high reach extendible turret (HRET), which can be used to pierce aircraft body for internal firefighting and used as foam and water tower for aerial firefighting.

The latest appliance operated by the department is a medium-sized rapid intervention vehicle (RIV), which is used for fire cover at His Majesty Sultan Flight Heliport. Designed for helipad fire cover, it is fitted with a front turret and carries firefighting and rescue equipment.

According to Superintendent at the Brunei Civil Aviation Fire Service Mohd Sajideen, the public tend to mistakenly think the department "is under the Brunei Fire and Rescue Department as most Bruneians always think that the word `bomba' itself is associated with all firefighting agencies in Brunei".

He also said in order to provide more extensive firefighting and rescue cover for the Brunei International Airport and other premises covered by the Brunei Civil Aviation Fire Service, all firefighters are well-trained and capable of mitigating with threats involving hazardous materials.

22 June 2011 Wednesday - A kitchen fire at a building at the centre of Belait Town trigger panic among the residents and shoopers at Belait Town. The fire which occured today (22 June 2011, Wednesday) around 2:00pm at a building adjacent to the Chung Hwa Secondary School staff house saw people fleeing out from the building.

Two fire engines and a support vehicle from the Belait Fire station rushed to the scene to fight the fire which is extinguished few minutes later. Due to the thick smoke in the affected room the firefighters had to wear the Breathing Apparatus (B.A) sets to locate and extinguish the fire source. The fire occured when most parts of the Belait District are affected by major blackout which are triggered by the storm.

Also seen on the scene are a fire engine from Brunei Shell Fire and Emergency Response (BSPFAERS) who are on standby as well as a team of paramedic from Suri Seri Begawan Hospital and police personnel from the Belait police station. Present at the scene was Suprintendent Chin Pok, deputy commanding officer of Belait Operational B command.

According to Belait Operational B Command Public Relation Officer Awang Mohd Taha bin Bakar said “The fire destroy a kitchen and it was suspected to be caused by a gas tank. A person are also injured in the incident when trying to evacuate from the building and transferred to the nearby hospital by members of the public.”

According to an eyewitness who are at the nearby shop said “I see people running and rushed to the burning building. Most people think it was a drill as the smoke are not quite thick. Luckily the firefighters quick action prevent it from spreading to the whole building”.

The building where the fire occured housed a tailor shop, a retail supply shop, beauty saloon as well as living quarters for foreign workers. The fire occured few weeks after the midnight house fire which destroy a twin house at Jalan Sungai Pandan.

11 June 2011 Saturday - A twin house at Jalan Sungai Pandan, Kuala Belait was destroyed in a Saturday (11 June 2011) early morning fire. The fire which caused around Satruday early morning at 1:58am (Saturday 11 June 2011). The fire caused half of the twin house are destroyed while the other half suffered major damage. This was enclosed by Acting ASFR Awamg Taha bin Bakar, Belait Operation B command Public Relation Officer.

The three day exhibition which was held by Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) concluded last Saturday night (21 May 2011, Saturday). It was held at The Mall, Gadong was for the Brunei Muara District and held in conjunction with its 90th anniversary celebration.

During the three day exhibition various activities was held for the public which saw the exhibition from various units under RBPF, band performance from the RBPF band as well as other interesting activities. Also participating the exhibition was the private companies and agencies related to RBPF such as Internal Security Department (ISD), Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) and Prison Department.

In order to increase its capability in rescue operation, the Brunei Fire and Rescue Department (BFRD) had a Special Squad Unit. This unit which are formed on 18 February 2002 will be deployed to large scale incidents and disaster. This unit also provide support to the operational firefighters if needed

Currently based at the former BFRD Training Centre at Berakas. This unit operates a fleet of three specialist fire appliances namely the Mobile Rescue Unit (MRU), Rescue Tender (RT) and Rapid Intervention Vehicle (RIV). The unit also operate a Special Squad Rescue Trailer (SSRT) which act as equipment carrier for deployment at rural areas or overseas.

The unit alos had 45 personnel where most of the personnel in the unit are mostly trained in the country and overseas such as Singapore, Malaysia and others. Beside training, the personnel also active in joining overseas training such as at the Singapore Mandai Training Village and Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. The formation of this unit at the same time also played an important toe in the the country participation in the ASEAN Committee on Disaster Management (ACDM)

The formation of the Special Squad Unit can be traced back in the end of the 1970s with the formation of the RESCUE team which are stationed at strategic fire stations in Belait and Brunei Muara District. At that time the team are actively deployed to typical Road Traffic Accident (RTA) and specialist rescue operation. The equipment during the era consist of basic rescue tools and hydraulic rescue equipment which are the state of art equipment at that time.

Now most of the equipment used by the unit are the state of art and latest similar to their counterparts in this region. The unit involvement can be seen during the Temburong Major Flood, Gadong Commercial Area Blaze, Suicide Attempt at MCYS buildings as well as in exercises held around Brunei.

A fire occurred last Tuesday (10 May 2011) at the store room at Flat 734 at the Pandan 8 Government Housing Area. The fire which are suspected to alight by discarded cigarette butt saw the damaged to one of the three units of store room. To make matter worse the fire also spread to the tires stored at store thus sending black smoke to the air.

The fire which occurred around 5pm caused curious neighbours who mostly government servants who just back from their office sprung into action with available peripherals to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading to the nearby store room or worst to the flat units above it. They used garden hoses which successfully slows the spread of fire. The fire saw extensive damage to the store room and a car also suffer minor damage. Luckily it didn't spread to the nearby gas lines.

A Light Pumper (LP) and Water Tender Ladder (WRL) from Kuala Belait Fire Station arrived at the scene to extinguish the fire. Another fire tender from Seria also arrived for standby role. Also present at the scene was Operational B commanding officer and police personnel from the Panaga Police Station Rapid Response Squad (STS) .

Two separate accident occurred last Sunday night (8 May 2011, Sunday) along Jalan Kumbang Pasang near the capital. The accidents saw the involvement of four cars and keep emergency services personnel busy responding to both accidents.

The first accident which occurred near the Bandar Seri Begawan Municipal Building occurred around 9:50pm. According to the eyewitness who is the father of one of the victim said “My children said the accident occurred when a Toyota Vios crashed into the road barrier. Upon seeing the accident, my children and another car nearby slows down. Suddenly the Toyota Vios make surprise movement and speed away from the scene. The runaway car left behind its front bumper and causing my children car and the nearby car bumped into each other.” He also added that he impact of the accident saw one of the passenger in one of the cars rushed to hospital for further checkup. A team of police personnel from BSB responded to the scene to control the situation.

Meanwhile few minutes later another accident occurred in front of the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Foundation Building. The accident which occurred around 10:45pm occurred when a car which was driven by a group of teenagers speeds up and nearly causing a car bumped into a police patrol car which conducting patrol at the area. The impact of the accident not only badly damaged the car but also damaging the roadside flowers and the nearby concrete drain.

According to the eyewitness who is also the victim of the first accident said “I was driving my siblings who just involved in the first accident when suddenly the car driven by the teenagers speed up behind us and crashed. Luckily we are able to evade from crashing the police car in front of our car”

The eyewitness also added that after the crash the teenagers managed to free themselves from their car and runaway from the scene. Fortunately the swift police action from BSB and the Royal Police Guard who patrol the area managed to nab the teenagers. A team of paramedics from the RIPAS Hospital EMAS team arrived at the scene and the teenagers are referred to RIPAS for further checkup.

Heavy rains and strong winds which occurred tonight (27 April 2011, Wednesday) caused several large tree branches fallen to the road leading to Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) Female Residential College. The incident which occurred around 7:00pm caused part of the road blocked and littered with tree branches. A team of firefighters from Berakas in one fire engine responded to the scene to clear the branches and cut some of the tree section in order to prevent more fallen branches. They worked bravely to clear the branches despite the heavy rainfall and thunderstorm. Also responded to the scene are UBD fire marshal personnel and SPSS security which helps to direct the traffic and control the scene. Fortunately the branches did not fall to the nearby parking lot.

25 April 2011 Monday - A man sustained injuries after involved in an early morning self accident at the Jerudong Highway in front of the Shahbandar Recreational Park. The self accident which occurred around 8:00am saw the car crashed into the road barriers before stopping. A team of firefighters led by Superintendent of Fire Rescue SFR Hj.Mohammad rushed to the scene with Accident Unit no.4 (AU4) and Water Tender Ladder no.4 (WRL4) from Jerudong fire station. The HZT is the largest appliance in the BSP FAERS newly commissioned Mercedes Actros fleet. This is the second HAZMAT tender in Brunei after the commissioning of the first HAZMAT tender in Brunei operated by the Brunei Fire and Rescue Department in 2003. This appliance carry equipment for mitigating hazardous material threats as well as equipment for decontamination and entry gear for HAZMAT cases. To make loading and unloading of equipment from the appliance easier this appliance is equipped with rear lift door. A group of undergraduates from Chiangmai University, Thailand paid a short visit to the Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB) Fire Station in the capital yesterday (14 April 2011, Thursday). The short visit is part of the visitors schedule during their stay in Brunei. The Chiangmai undergraduates are in Brunei to visit their Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) counterparts who participated the ASEAN Universities Games (AUG) which was held at Chingmai last year.

The group was also joined by two Liason Officers (LO) from UBD. Upon arrival at the station the group was greeted by the BSB Fire Station Station Commander Assitant Superintendent of Fire Rescue ASFR Pg.Asmali bin Pg.Hj.Ahmad. ASFR Pg.Asmali briefed the students on the fire station history and detail.

The Chiangmai visitors also given opportunity on wearing the firefighting equipment and also riding the fire engines at the station. Two demonstration was held during the visit namely the wearing of Breathing Apparatus (B.A set) and snake catching demonstration. The visit concluded with the group photo session.

Hundreds of visitors mainly youths and children flocked to the Fire Rescue Open Day which was held in conjunction with the Brunei Fire and Rescue Department (BFRD) 51^st anniversary. The half day Open Day took place at the BFRD training centre Lambak Kanan recently (18 March 2011, Friday).

During the Open Day various activities are held such as fire engines and fire motorcycles exhibitions, life air pack jump, Turntable Ladder (TTL) ride, fire engine and motorcycle ride and firefighting and rescue equipment exhibition. The open day is held in order to give opportunity to the public to see themselves the firefighting and rescue equipment which is used by BFRD and as well as it is a way for the public to interact with the firefighters in order to know their scope of works.

A UBD student who visited the open day said “I applaud the department initiative in organizing such informative open day as though such event it can show to the public that BFRD really capable in protecting the public in every incidents. At the same time it is a way to promote the firefighting career to the public”.

16 March 2011 Wednesday - Brunei Fire and Rescue Department (BFRD) recently (16 March 2011, Wednesday) receive 27 new vehicles which will be used at its fire stations for firefighting and rescue operations. The new vehicles hand over was held at Lambak Kanan Training Centre.

Present at guest of honour to the event was Dato Paduka Haji Abd Majid bin Mangarshah, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs. Also present was the Director of Fire Rescue Yahya bin Hj.Abdul Rahman, Deputy Director of Fire and Rescue Lim Hock Guan as well as officers and staff from Brunei Fire and Rescue Department and National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC).

The ceremony started with the recital of Al-Fatihah followed by the handover of keys from the fire vehicles supplier namely S.K.Fire Rosenbauer, Goh Hock Kee Motors and NBT Brunei Sdn Bhd. The keys were later presented by the guest of honour to the Director of Fire and Rescue. The guest of honour and other BFRD officers later consented to the sprinkling of the scented water and “tepung tawar”.

The new vehicles fleet consists of 9 units Mitsubishi Pajero Command Cars (CC) which are used for officers and personnel transport, 9 units Mitsubishi L200 and 1 unit of Toyota Hilux Multi Purpose Vehicle (MPV) which is used both for personnel transport and carrying equipment, 5 units of Mitsubishi Canter pick-up which is used for cargo transport and 1 unit of Isuzu NPR with SK Fire bodyworks Light Pumper (LP) which is used for firefighting at areas which are inaccessible to major fire tenders.

14 March 2011 (Monday) - Four foreigners sustained injuries after the vehicle they were in slammed into a lamppost along Jalan Menteri Besar in Berakas at around 12.40pm yesterday. According to eye-witnesses, it was allegedly hit by a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV). Two of the foreigners were trapped in the station wagon. Fire & Rescue personnel from the Berakas Fire Station who were led by ASO Uni rushed to the scene to free the two foreigners from the mangled vehicle. In the recently held emergency response demonstration at the four districts by the Brunei Fire and Rescue Department (BFRD) in conjunction with the department 51^st anniversary, the demonstration had successfully impressed the public in term of the department capabilities in handling any incidents.

During the drill the BFRD used all their advanced technology which is used in both saving live and fighting fires. At Bandar Seri Begawan the department used their advanced fire appliances such as the Turntable Ladder (TTL), Bronto Skylift Hydraulic Platform (HP), Breathing Apparatus Tender (BAT) as well as other firefighting appliances.

Also showcased during the demonstrations at the four districts are the BFRD capabilities in handling various incidents such as water accidents, Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) cases, high rise rescue, oil spill and others.

A UBD student who are at the demonstration at Teck Guan Plaza at the capital said “With such demonstration we as members of public can know the readiness and capability of the fire rescue department. At the same time it also showcase the capability of the department in coordinated along with other agencies such as paramedics, police, media partner as well as other government and non-government agencies which are usually involved in any large scale disaster.” He also added that through such events it can strengthened the ties between the department and the public at the same time it also show that the department scope of work are not just fighting fires.

Meanwhile a 12 year old boy from Belait said “I found out that such demonstration was interesting for kids as such demo was not held everyday. It also can be a way to promote firefighter job to the public.”

In relation to this the members of the public would like to wish the Brunei Fire and Rescue Department on the 51^st anniversary since the department was separated from the police force in the 1960.

Fire at Kampong Ayer 8 March 2011

8 March 2011 Tuesday - A fire which occurred roughly around 4:00pm (8 March 2011) destroying two houses and causing damage to other two nearby house. The fire occurred at Kampong Setia B.

Several fire boats from various fire stations under Operational D command were rushed to the scene to douse the fire. Fortunately the water tide during the fire was high thus enabling the firefighters to pump water on high pressure. Also responded to the scene were members of the Royal Brunei Police Force and paramedics.

Present to observe the scene were Minister of Home Affairs Yang Berhormat Menteri Hal Ehwal Dalam Negeri, Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Othman, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Director of Fire and Rescue Department Awang Yahya bin Hj.Abdul Rahman, Deputy Director of Fire and Rescue Department Lim Hock Guan as well as other senior government officers.

The fire was successfully doused by 5:30pm and the caused was under investigation. This was the first fire reported in kampong Ayer for the year 2011.
