AFS receive 3 new appliances




The Airport Fire Service (AFS) of the Brunei Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) recently (5 January 2012) receive three new fire appliances. The new fire appliances consists of two major foam tender and one firefighting water tender.

The inauguration of the new fire appliances are officiated by Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Hamzah Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdullah bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakar, Minister of Communication. during the Aviation Day celebration which was held at the Brunei International Airport (BIA) main fire station.

According to Mohd Sajideen who is the Superintendent of the AFS said “This new fire appliances will replaced the ageing fire appliances which is used since the 1990s. AT the same time this new fire appliance also will increase the professionalism of the AFS in handling various firefighting and rescue challenges as well as to meet International Civil Aviation (ICAO) category for providing aircraft firefighting cover.”

The Major Foam Tender which is also known as crash tender is build on Fresia truck chassis and powered by Iveco engine. While the bodyworks are build by Naffco of Dubai, UAE. This appliance is able to carry 12,000 liters of water and 1,440 liters of foam. It also able to speed off 120 km/h in case of emergency occurred at the runway.

Meanwhile the Firefighting water tender appliance was build on Iveco Trakker chassis and bodywork by Sentosa of Indonesia. This appliance will be used by AFS to respond to domestic fire around the airport premises and to provide water support during large scale emergency such as aircraft related incidents. As an addition this new appliance also carry specialized equipment for Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) incidents in case such accidents occurred at the airport.
