Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) through its Office of Health, Safety and Environment (OHSE) held an emergency response exercise at the UBD Faculty of Science (FOS). The two day exercise which started last Thursday (8 March 2012, Thursday) ended today (9 March 2012, Friday).
The exercise saw the involvement of various agencies namely UBD as the home agency Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF), Brunei Fire and Rescue Department (BFRD), BFRD Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) team, Ministry of Health and Department of Environment , Park and Recreational (JASTRE).
The first day of the exercise saw the evacuation of the FOS building at UBD for the mitigating and contaminating scenario. This includes the cordoning of the roads leading to FOS by the UBD security. Meanwhile on the second and last day of the exercise saw the scenario of handling and transporting of the so-called acidic material to the disposal area at Lambak.
According to Hazilan Ramli the coordinator of the exercise who is the UBD OHSE officer said “This is the first time UBD held such exercise which is to test the response of the UBD students and staffs in such incidents if the real ones occur. During the exercise we are achieving the objective such as the good coordinating between participating agencies, we also will held many safety drills and exercises around UBD complex to test the readiness of the UBD community”.
The exercise was held coincidently with the Brunei Fire and Rescue Department (BFRD) 52nd anniversary which is celebrated nationwide every 9 March.
