A rubbish fire occurred last Saturday (11 August 2012,
Saturday) at one of the rubbish skip at the Mumong refuse collection point. The
fire which occurred around 9am caused part of the Mumong road covered in thick
smoke due as the fire spread to the entire rubbish in the skip.
Upon receiving an emergency call from the public a team of
firefighters and two fire engines from Belait Fire Station rushed to the scene
to extinguish the fire. The fire then extinguished in 10 minutes time. To
prevent the fire from re-ignited the firefighters had to dampen the rubbish as
well as cooling the skip.
According to a villager lived near the refuse collection point said “The refuse
skip possibly burned by irresponsible people who typically burned the rubbish
once they saw it full. However this time the fire tend to spread rapidly due to
the hot and dry weather condition. Fortunately the firefighters extinguish the
fire immediately thus it help to reduce the slight haze which occur due to the
fire”.
