The scene in Jalan Sultan, Bandar Seri Begawan come to
standstill this morning (13 November 2013, Wednesday) after the fire bell rings
at Teck Guan Plaza around 9:30am. This later followed with tenants and shoppers
rushed out from the building few seconds after the bell rings. Few minutes
later a team of firefighters in five engines from Bandar Seri Begawan and
Beribi fire stations arrived to control and extinguish the fire suspected at
the building upper floor.
However the scenario above is part of the practical
assessments and surprise fire drill in conjunction with the the Fire Safety
Management 2013 (FSM 2013) seminar which is held recently (13 November 2013,
Wednesday) with cooperation from Tech Guan Plaza management and Operational A
command of the FRD.
During the fire drill the seminar participants are divided
into several groups where they with the cooperation from the building tenants
conduct assessment on building fire safety aspects such as emergency exits,
fire extinguishers, fire alarms as well as evacuation routes. While the
firefighters involved in the drill show the participants on the importance of
the fire risers, fire lifts as well as wide access for firefighting and rescue
operation as well as for fire engine access.
Present to witness the drill was senior officers and staffs
from the FRD as well as invited facilitators from Malaysia fire and rescue
department (MFRD) who present their paperwork during the seminar.
Among the objective of the drill is to expose the
participants to real life situation where they can asses themselves the fire
safety issues and exchange their findings and ideas during the seminar. At the
same time the FRD also held such drill to create fire safety awareness among
building owners and members of the public in line with their vision “Working
with community to protect what they value”.
