Floods, landslides hits rural Tutong



 Heavy rainfall and thunderstorm situation last Saturday (8 December 2012, Saturday) caused major disaster situation at rural Tutong areas. Among the badly affected mukims were Mukim Kiudang and Mukim Lamunin.

On Saturday afternoon until midnight flashfloods are reported at several villages under Mukim Kiudang namely Bakiau, Kebia, Kiudang, Mungkom and Padnunok villages. Several section of Mungkom road, Padnunok road as well as the Lamunin main road are submerged by the flashflood. To add worse the flashfloods also brought mud from the earthmoving activity at Lamunin and Padnunok area. A hardware shop and a workshop are also affected by the flashflood. Until this morning (9 December 2012, Sunday) several roads and houses at Mukim Kiudang are still submerged by the flood.

Until 9am on Sunday water level at main rivers in Mukim Kiudang namely Simut and Kiudang river still rising due to the huge amount of rainfall as well as flood water from the villages at the mukim

A villager at Padnunok village when interviewed on the disaster said “An hour after the heavy rainfall which started around 4pm we saw that the water started to overflow from the main drain bank. On seeing this unusual situation I as well as my neighbour quickly moved our vehicles from the house compound to the roadside which is much higher”. He also added that this is the worse flooding since they lived in the village.

Meanwhile a worker at the Padnunok hardware shop when interviewed said “The flood water rise rapidly as the rain continues, we can see that the workshop worker next door rushed to moved the vehicles at the workshop to the main road while several cars are unable to be moved due to rapid rise of the water. Even some of our hardware stock are also damaged by the debris brought by the river water”.

The flooding are also said to be caused by the rising of earthmoving activitiy at the Padnunok and Lamunin area where the mud from the site clogged the main drain. 

Beside flooding, landslides can be seen along Jalan Lamunin hillsides. At Simpang 1329 or popularly known by the locals as Simpang Bangsal Bang Talip a team of firefighters from Lamunin fire station are working around the clock to assists residents at the simpang as the nearby hill are affected by major landslide.
